Most spiders in Northern Virginia are harmless and actually help control other insects. But two species found in our area can cause serious medical problems when they bite. Knowing how to identify dangerous spiders, where they hide, and what to do if you find them in your home can make a real difference for your family’s safety.
🚨 If You Are Bitten by a Spider
- Stay calm and try to capture or photograph the spider if safe to do so
- Wash the bite area with soap and water
- Apply ice to reduce swelling
- Seek medical attention immediately for any bite causing significant pain, swelling, or other symptoms
- Call Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222
- Go to the emergency room if you develop fever, chills, muscle cramps, or a spreading wound
The Two Dangerous Spiders in Virginia
🖤 Black Widow Spider
The Black Widow is the most venomous spider in North America and is found throughout Northern Virginia. The female is easily recognized by her shiny black body and the distinctive red hourglass marking on the underside of her abdomen.
- Size: About 1.5 inches including legs
- Where they hide: Garages, sheds, woodpiles, outdoor furniture, under decks, and in dark undisturbed corners
- When active: Year-round indoors, more active outdoors in warmer months
- Bite symptoms: Immediate sharp pain, muscle cramps, sweating, nausea, and in severe cases difficulty breathing. Symptoms can last several days.
- Who is most at risk: Children, elderly, and people with compromised immune systems face the greatest danger
🟤 Brown Recluse Spider
The Brown Recluse is less common in Northern Virginia than in southern states, but it does exist here and can be transported inside on boxes, furniture, and clothing from affected areas. It is light brown with a distinctive violin-shaped marking on its back.
- Size: About 1 inch including legs
- Where they hide: Inside cardboard boxes, stored clothing, shoes, behind furniture, and in closets and storage areas
- Behavior: True to their name, they prefer undisturbed areas and only bite when accidentally pressed against skin
- Bite symptoms: The bite is often painless at first. Over 8 hours a blister develops. In severe cases, the tissue around the bite can die (necrosis), requiring medical treatment for weeks.
- Important: Always shake out shoes and clothing that have been stored for a long time
Common Harmless Spiders You Will See
🕷️ Wolf Spider
Large, hairy, and fast-moving. Wolf spiders look terrifying but are harmless. They hunt on the ground rather than building webs. Commonly found in basements and garages. They sometimes enter homes in fall seeking warmth.
🕷️ Common House Spider
The most frequent indoor spider complaint in Northern Virginia. Brown or tan with a rounded abdomen. Builds messy, irregular webs in corners. Completely harmless but creates unsightly webs throughout the home if populations grow large.
🕷️ Cellar Spider (Daddy Longlegs)
Those long-legged spiders in your basement are cellar spiders. Despite the myth, their bite is not dangerous. They are completely harmless and actually eat other spiders including more harmful species.
Where Spiders Hide in Northern Virginia Homes
Spiders enter homes looking for food, warmth, and shelter. The more insects you have inside your home, the more spiders you will attract because they follow their food supply. Common hiding spots include:
- Cluttered garages and storage areas
- Woodpiles stored near the house
- Cardboard boxes in basements and attics
- Under and behind large appliances
- Inside outdoor furniture stored in garages
- Along window frames and door frames
- In crawl spaces and basement corners
⚠️ Prevention Tips to Keep Spiders Out
- Seal cracks around windows, doors, and utility penetrations
- Replace cardboard storage boxes with sealed plastic bins
- Keep garages and storage areas organized and clutter-free
- Move woodpiles away from the house and off the ground
- Install or repair door sweeps on exterior doors
- Reduce outdoor lighting that attracts insects that attract spiders
- Vacuum regularly, including corners, under furniture, and along baseboards
